Custom Medical Uniforms: How to Choose Doctor Coats, Nurse Uniforms, and Scrubs

1. Separate the Three Categories First
Medical uniforms fall into three categories with very different fabric and workmanship:
- Doctor lab coats: worn in outpatient clinics and during rounds. Long style, stand or lapel collar, multiple pockets for a stethoscope and pens. Worn daily, with moderate wash requirements.
- Nurse uniforms: worn in wards and clinics. Two-piece or dress style, color-coded by department or rank. Washed almost daily, so wash durability matters a lot.
- Surgical scrubs: worn in operating rooms and sterile areas. Short sleeves, round collar, few or no pockets to reduce dirt retention. Must withstand high-temperature sterilization with low shrinkage.
Before purchasing, build a list by department, role, and size. Do not summarize all three categories under the single word "nurse uniforms".
2. Fabric: Pure Cotton, TC, Anti-Static, or Antibacterial
Four common fabrics are used in medical uniforms. Match each one to the right department:

Pay special attention to the operating room: do not use ordinary pure cotton or TC. Regular fabric shrinks and pills after repeated high-temperature sterilization, and it is not anti-static, so it attracts dust and compromises cleanliness. Surgical scrubs should at least use anti-static fabric with low shrinkage.
3. Nurse Uniform Color Coding: 6 Levels Are Common Practice
Many buyers ask whether nurse uniforms come in six levels. This is a common internal practice where hospitals use color to distinguish departments and ranks. It varies between hospitals, but the typical mapping is:
- White: general wards, trainee nurses
- Pink: obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics
- Light blue: internal medicine, outpatient
- Dark blue or navy: surgery
- Green: operating rooms, supply rooms
- Purple: ICU, intensive care
There is no mandatory national standard for colors — it is a hospital-specific convention. Ask whether your hospital has an established color code before ordering to avoid producing an entire batch incorrectly.
4. Safety: At Least Class B for Skin Contact
Medical uniforms touch the skin directly, so their safety class must meet Class B of GB 18401, the national standard for textile product safety: formaldehyde no more than 75 mg/kg, pH between 4.0 and 7.5, no odor, and no detectable decomposable aromatic amine dyes.
Surgical gowns with stricter hygiene requirements should also follow the YY/T 0506 series covering surgical gowns, drapes, and clean garments.
Before ordering, ask the supplier for third-party test reports from labs such as SGS, CTI, or Pony Testing — do not rely only on the manufacturer's self-inspection.
5. Customization Process: Five Steps from Measuring to Delivery
A proper medical uniform order follows five steps:
- Department list: count requirements by department, role, and size
- Fabric swatch approval: send samples, test washing, check shrinkage
- Sample approval: make two or three sample sets for fitting
- Mass production: fabric, workmanship, and logo fully traceable
- Delivery inspection: sample 5% for fitting, check workmanship, color difference, and shrinkage
6. Price Reference
- Ordinary TC nurse uniforms: ￥80 to ￥150 per set
- Pure cotton lab coats: ￥100 to ￥180 per piece
- Anti-static surgical scrubs: ￥150 to ￥250 per set
- Antibacterial medical uniforms: from ￥200 per set
