Since the pandemic, many companies have been doing the same thing: mixing suits with polo shirts so that employees look like neither salespeople nor programmers.

Applying these rules to a corporate uniform order is more detailed than people expect. 1. Collar Type: Transitioning from Peak Lapels to Small Square Collars

Smart casual rarely features "peak lapels" — those pointed, outward-folded lapels commonly seen on formal suit jackets. Peak lapels carry a formal-suit semantics; overusing them makes the wearer look older. In corporate uniforms, there are three common transition paths:

• Small square-collar shirt: collar tips roughly 5 mm shorter than a standard shirt, suits round faces and shorter face shapes
• Small pointed-collar shirt: collar length sits in the middle — the safest universal option in smart casual, works for both men and women
• Collarless jacket / stand collar: used for doormen, greeters, and lightweight service roles, looks younger than notched lapels

2. Fit: Returning to "Tailored but Not Tight"

Smart casual does not mean skin-tight. "Tailored but not tight" is the key judgment point.

Specific quantifiable indicators:

• Shirt chest allowance: 12–16 cm above the wearer's net body measurement is the safest range (less than 8 cm is too tight; more than 20 cm looks baggy)
• Suit jacket sleeve length: about 1 cm below the wrist bone, exposing 1–1.5 cm of shirt cuff

3. Color Palette: Four Neutrals + Two Accent Colors

Smart casual color is not limited to the classic five (navy, black, gray, white, beige). The introduction of two high-frequency accent colors is the biggest difference between smart casual and traditional corporate uniforms:

Accent color should not exceed 30% — beyond that threshold, daily visual exposure leads to aesthetic fatigue and may appear too informal in front of clients. Smart casual has only two core fabric requirements: the visual must not look cheap + it must be wrinkle-resistant and easy to maintain.

Three common, deployable choices:

• Wool blend (30–50% wool): natural sheen, good resilience, ideal for suit jackets, trousers, and skirts. Downside: higher unit price (1.8–2.5× more expensive than pure polyester at the same weight)
• Mercerized cotton (cotton + mercerization process): silky sheen on the surface, but essentially cotton. Significantly better post-wash flatness than pure cotton. Suitable for shirts and polos
• Cotton-linen blend: breathable and lightweight. Suitable for summer smart-casual jackets; downside is moderate wrinkle resistance, requiring additional wrinkle-resistant finishing

5. Accessories: Belt, Footwear, and Scarf — the Three Underestimated Positions

Accessories are the dividing line between "dressed right" and "dressed well" in smart casual. Three quantifiable checkpoints:

• Belt: width 3–3.5 cm, silver or gold buckle (do not choose two-tone buckles), metal color should match footwear
• Footwear: smart casual prefers Derby shoes or loafers. Do not choose Monk shoes with metallic buckles — strong metallic decoration does not fit the smart casual aesthetic
• Scarves / ties: women in smart casual are recommended to wear scarves; men in smart casual are not required to wear ties, but a plain pocket square is recommended

If the company wants to keep accessory costs down, prioritize footwear investment — it occupies the largest visual share, and colleagues see it most easily.
